"What exactly is this car?" turns out to have layered answers. The DVLA holds the legal identity, the V5C carries the technical basics, the VIN encodes the factory build, and the performance numbers everyone actually argues about live somewhere else entirely. Here's the practical route through all four layers: what each one gives you, free or otherwise.
Layer 1: the DVLA record, free and official
Everything the DVLA registers about a car is a registration lookup away. What this layer honestly can't tell you: trim level, options, power figures, dimensions or weights. Those live further down the stack.
Layer 2: the V5C logbook
The V5C's technical section bridges the register and the physical car: cylinder capacity, fuel, colour, wheelplan, the revenue weight and maximum mass figures that matter for towing, and (on newer documents) the Euro standard and CO2 printed in black and white.
When you're buying, the V5C's job is agreement: its fields should match both the DVLA record you pulled in layer 1 and the car in front of you. Weights are also the one spec detail where the logbook beats every online source, because the public record doesn't return them.
Layer 3: the VIN, the exact factory build
The 17-character Vehicle Identification Number encodes manufacturer, model, engine variant, plant and model year: the precise machine the factory built, before any badge marketing. When you need certainty about which engine or specification a car left the factory with (insurance quotes for modified cars, parts ordering, verifying a "genuine" special edition), the VIN is the authority. Dealers and manufacturer customer service decode it on request, and several brands run online VIN lookups.
Two rules from our VIN check guide: read the VIN from the car itself (windscreen plate, door pillar), and match it against the V5C before trusting anything it decodes to. A VIN that disagrees with the logbook isn't a spec puzzle: it's an identity alarm.
Layer 4: manufacturer figures, the numbers the DVLA doesn't hold
BHP, torque, 0-62 times, top speed, dimensions, boot capacity, kerb weight: none of it is in the public DVLA data, which is why no honest free check offers it. The reliable source is the manufacturer's original documentation for the exact variant: spec sheet, brochure or the handbook pack in the glovebox. Layer 1's engine size and fuel type plus layer 3's VIN tell you precisely which variant to look up, which matters because a "320d" badge alone spans several power outputs across years.
Treat third-party spec databases as convenient but secondary; they're scraped and aggregated, and trim-level errors are common. When a number matters (towing limits, insurance declarations), manufacturer documentation or the V5C wins.
Putting it together when buying
The four layers earn their keep at a viewing. Before you travel, pull the record with a free car check and compare it against the advert. Wrong fuel, colour or engine size ends the trip before it starts. At the car, match the VIN to the V5C, and the V5C to the record. Ask for the handbook pack; its spec pages describe the car as built. Five minutes of agreement across all four layers is the difference between buying a known quantity and buying a story.
