What the free spec check returns
Every listing is written to sell; the register was written to record. That difference is the entire value of a spec check. When advert and record disagree, either somebody made a mistake or somebody is hoping you won't look, and two minutes here settles which before you commit to a journey or a deposit.
The check returns the fields DVLA genuinely holds for any UK reg: engine size, fuel type, body type, colour, year, CO2 output and Euro standard. Equally important is what the public record leaves out: BHP, torque, transmission, kerb weight and dimensions. For those, the manufacturer's spec sheet for the exact variant (or the owner's handbook) is the dependable source, and the V5C logbook carries the weights.

Why specs matter when buying used: mismatch as a fraud signal
A spec mismatch is the cheapest red flag in used-car buying, because it can be caught from your sofa. At the innocent end, a seller has copied the wrong trim level out of a brochure. At the serious end, the plates on the car belong to a different vehicle entirely, and the mismatch is the clone showing through.
Worth comparing, advert against register:
- Engine size, a favourite spot for optimistic advert-writing
- Year and first registration date: does the plate's age fit the year the advert claims?
- Body type, instantly checkable against the photos (saloon or estate, hatchback or SUV)
- Colour, which should match the photographs unless a respray has been declared
- Fuel type, since petrol and diesel versions of one model can be very different cars
- CO2 output and Euro standard, the two fields that set ULEZ treatment and tax
A single small discrepancy usually means carelessness. Two or more, or anything touching the car's identity, means verifying the VIN, chassis stamps and door-pillar plates in person before any money moves.
BHP, torque and performance figures explained
Start with the honest note: no power figures appear in this check, because DVLA's public record holds none. BHP still matters when you're weighing adverts against each other, though. Brake horsepower is the engine's peak output, the headline number, and it tracks acceleration only loosely: two cars with matching BHP can feel nothing alike once their torque curves diverge.
Torque, quoted in Newton metres (Nm) or pound-feet (lb-ft), is the twisting force behind every overtake and hill start. It sets how strong a car feels at everyday speeds, and it's why diesels and electric motors, both torque-rich by nature, pull so confidently from a standstill compared with an equivalent petrol.
For real-world pace, power-to-weight beats either number alone. A 1,200kg hot hatch with 200 BHP (167 BHP/tonne) feels quicker than a 1,800kg SUV with 250 BHP (139 BHP/tonne). Both figures live on the manufacturer's spec sheet for the exact variant, and kerb weight is also recorded on the car's V5C logbook.
Fuel type, CO2 and ULEZ implications
In 2026, fuel type sets far more than the fuel bill. It steers clean-air-zone eligibility, the VED rate, company-car BIK and, increasingly, insurance pricing in city postcodes. The check returns fuel type, CO2 output and Euro standard together because that is how every one of those systems reads them.
For ULEZ and the other UK clean-air zones, the Euro standard is the deciding line: Euro 4 for petrol (broadly cars first registered from 2006) and Euro 6 for diesel (broadly from September 2015). Fall short and driving anywhere in the London-wide zone costs £12.50 a day, 24 hours a day except Christmas Day, with a £180 penalty for non-payment that halves to £90 inside 14 days.

Body type, dimensions and kerb weight
Body and mass shape ownership more than buyers allow. A 4.7m saloon and a 4.7m estate share a footprint yet carry very different lives, and a 1,950kg kerb weight puts a car in a different insurance group and towing-licence bracket from a 1,500kg one. The check shows the body category and wheelplan DVLA records; exact dimensions and weights sit outside the free data, with the manufacturer publishing the former and the V5C recording the latter.
The weights are also the towing story. Kerb weight, gross vehicle weight and maximum train weight together decide what a vehicle can legally carry and pull, and all of them are printed on the V5C. If a caravan or trailer is part of your plans, ask to see that page before you fall for the car.
The recorded body type and colour earn their keep as fraud checks too. An "estate" in the listing for a car the register calls a saloon is not a typo to shrug at; it's a contradiction that needs an answer before anything else does.
Spec data sources, accuracy and edge cases
One official source feeds the spec: the DVLA's Vehicle Enquiry Service, keeper of the registered identity, engine size, fuel type, body category, CO2, Euro standard, colour and registration dates. The MOT side of the result (test history and mileage) comes separately, from the DVSA's MOT history database.
For mainstream cars first registered in the UK within the last 15 years, the record is excellent. The edges are where care is needed: imported vehicles can carry blank fields, a modified car can carry an engine the register has never heard of, and the oldest vehicles sometimes rest on thin original paperwork. CO2 is often absent on cars first registered before March 2001, which were taxed on engine size and never needed the figure.
In any of those cases, treat the on-screen spec as a guide and let the metal give the final answer: the V5C, the chassis stamps and the car itself, read together.
Pair the report with a physical inspection
For a spec check, the viewing is an identity parade. Find the VIN at the base of the windscreen, on the door-pillar plate and stamped into the chassis, and read all of them against the V5C: several numbers, one car, no exceptions. This is the one comparison no database can run for you, and the one cloners rely on buyers skipping.
Then square the rest of the record with the metal: engine size against the badge and the engine bay, fuel type against the filler flap, colour and body style against the paint in front of you. When everything agrees, buy with confidence. When it doesn't, the register is rarely the one that's lying.
