What a VIN is (and what it isn't)

A VIN is a 17-character run of letters and digits, something like WBA1234567890ABCD, assigned by the manufacturer when the car is built. It has no spaces or punctuation, and it never contains the letters I, O or Q, which were left out of the standard because they look too much like 1 and 0. If you think you can see one of those letters in a VIN, you're looking at a digit.

Two things it isn't. It isn't the registration number: plates (typically seven characters) are issued by the DVLA and can follow an owner from car to car, while the VIN belongs to the metal and never changes. And it isn't different from the "chassis number": VIN, chassis number and frame number are three names for the same code, and the V5C uses them interchangeably.

How the 17 characters break down

You don't need to decode a VIN character by character to buy a car safely, but knowing the shape of it helps you spot when something's off:

The practical use for a buyer is consistency, not decoding. The first three characters should match the badge on the bonnet (a Mercedes wearing a VIN with a Ford prefix is a car with a story to explain), and the model-year code at character 10 should sit sensibly against the age the seller claims. Anything deeper, like exact trim or engine codes, is dealer-tool territory and not something you need at a viewing.

Where to find the VIN

Start with the paperwork: the V5C logbook shows the VIN in section D, labelled VIN, chassis or frame number. This is the reference copy you'll check everything else against, and it's the version a seller can read out over the phone before you travel. On the car, look in this order:

  • Base of the windscreen, driver's side: a small plate or printed strip visible from outside. This is the one you can read without keys, which makes it the auction favourite.
  • Driver's door pillar or door edge: a plate or sticker, often alongside the build date, weights and paint code, revealed when you open the driver's door.
  • In the engine bay: stamped into the bulkhead or a chassis leg, or on a riveted plate. Harder to read, but also harder to fake, because it's cut into the metal.
  • On the chassis itself: the factory stamping underneath the car, used for forensic-level verification rather than routine checks.
  • In the service book or handbook: printed, and useful as supporting evidence only; books get lost, swapped and forged, so never rely on one alone.

The core check: match every VIN against the V5C

Cloning is the fraud this check defeats. A stolen car is given the identity of a legitimate one (often a written-off or exported twin of the same make, model and colour) by swapping the plates and the most visible identifiers. The paperwork can look perfect because it is perfect: it belongs to the donor car. A history check run on the registration comes back clean for the same reason. The one thing a fraudster struggles to change is every physical VIN on the vehicle.

So the check is simple, and takes five minutes at the viewing. With the V5C in hand, read the full 17 characters at the windscreen, at the door pillar and, if you can get the bonnet up, in the engine bay, and confirm each one matches the logbook character for character. While you're there, look at how the visible VIN is mounted: shiny new rivets on an older car, glue where a plate should be riveted, disturbed trim around the windscreen strip or grinding marks near a stamping deserve the same suspicion as an outright mismatch.

If anything doesn't match, don't buy the car, don't leave a deposit, and don't talk yourself into an innocent explanation: there rarely is one. Checking VINs when buying at auction

Auctions compress everything: minutes to inspect, usually no test drive, and far less comeback than buying from a dealer; many lots are effectively sold as seen. That makes the VIN habit more valuable, not less.

At the viewing, the windscreen VIN is your friend, because you can read it without keys. Note it, or photograph it, along with the registration for each lot on your shortlist, and compare it against the V5C where the auction house holds it; most will show you the document on request. While you're stood there, run the registration through a free car check on your phone: the MOT history and mileage timeline will tell you more about the car's life than the catalogue line does, and it all feeds into your maximum bid.

Then apply the usual rule, just more strictly: a VIN you can't read, can't verify or can't match to the paperwork is a lot you let go. At a private sale you can walk away at any point before paying; at auction, once the hammer falls the car is yours, mismatch and all.

Easy mistakes when reading a VIN

  • Misreading digits as letters. VINs never contain I, O or Q; what looks like one is a 1 or a 0.
  • Adding spaces or dashes. A VIN is one unbroken 17-character string; write it down the same way.
  • Recording a partial VIN. The last few characters aren't enough to verify anything; always take all 17.
  • Confusing it with the registration. Seven characters on a plate is not seventeen on a chassis; make sure you're comparing VIN with VIN.
  • Taking the seller's word for it. A VIN quoted from memory or typed into a text message means little. Read it from the V5C and from the car yourself.
