Quick answer
Mileage is the first number anyone reads on a used-car advert, and by itself it says surprisingly little. Forty thousand miles could be four gentle years on the motorway or twelve years of cold-start school runs; ninety thousand could be a hard life or barely run in.
What makes the number useful is context: how far UK cars actually travel in a year, how that varies with age and fuel type, and how the car in front of you compares. This guide sets out the benchmark figures, a simple way to judge any specific car against them, and the reason the shape of a mileage history tells you more than its average ever can.
What the average UK car covers in a year
The benchmark figures below are approximations derived from Department for Transport data and large-scale analyses of MOT odometer readings. The exact numbers shuffle a little from year to year, so treat them as yardsticks rather than targets:

If you still carry "10,000 miles a year" in your head as the standard assumption, it's out of date. Annual mileage per car has drifted downwards for two decades (changed commuting habits, more working from home and more multi-car households have all chipped away at it), and around 7,000 miles is today's normal. Why fuel type changes the average
Diesel cars cover about a third more distance each year than petrol cars, and the reason is self-selection rather than anything mechanical. Diesel makes financial sense for people who drive a long way: better economy at a steady cruise, and traditionally the default for company cars, motorway commuters and anyone towing. High-mileage drivers buy diesels, so diesels record high mileages.
Petrol cars skew the other way (town cars, second cars and short-trip runabouts), which drags their average down to about 6,200 miles. The practical upshot when you're judging a used car: hold a diesel to the higher benchmark. A diesel adding 8,000 miles a year is entirely ordinary, while a diesel showing tiny annual mileage is a slightly odd purchase worth asking about, because short urban trips are the one job diesels do badly.
Why age changes it even more
A car's busiest years are its first. Nearly new cars average around 12,500 miles a year. Many are company cars, lease cars or the main car of a household that bought new precisely because it drives a lot. From there, annual use declines steadily. By the time a car is 13 or more years old it typically covers around 4,200 miles a year: it has often become the household's second car, semi-retired to the station run and the supermarket.
This matters because the naive sum (total mileage divided by age against 7,100) quietly assumes a car is driven the same amount in every year of its life. Real cars front-load their miles. A ten-year-old car showing 85,000 miles (8,500 a year) probably did 12,000-mile years early on and 4,000-mile years recently, and that's a perfectly normal biography.
How to judge the mileage on a specific car
Start with the simple division: total recorded mileage divided by age in years, compared against the benchmark for the car's fuel type. A seven-year-old petrol hatchback showing 46,000 miles has averaged about 6,600 a year: fractionally over the petrol norm, completely unremarkable. The same car showing 98,000 has averaged 14,000 a year, which points to motorway commuting and makes the service history the next question. Showing 15,000, it has barely been used, and you'd want to know how it was stored and maintained through all that sitting.
Being a few thousand miles a year either side of the benchmark means very little on its own. The averages are the middle of a wide spread (a 20,000-mile-a-year sales rep and a 3,000-mile-a-year retiree are both normal customers), so use the figures to frame questions, not to pass verdicts.
The shape of the timeline matters more than the average
Two cars can share an identical lifetime average and have had completely different lives, and the average is the one thing a dishonest seller controls, because winding back the total rewrites it. The year-by-year pattern is harder to fake and far more informative:

A front-loaded history is nothing to fear. A late slump might be innocent too (a second car arrived, a job moved home), but it needs a believable explanation, because reducing the displayed total also flattens the final year of the record. What counts as good mileage on a used car
The rule of thumb: about 7,000 miles for each year of age. Below that, the market calls it low mileage and prices it up; above, and the price drifts down. But "good" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, because 100,000 miles or more is not automatically bad. Modern engines routinely sail past 150,000 when serviced on schedule, motorway miles are the gentlest miles a car can do, and a documented high-miler is often a sounder purchase than a neglected low-mileage car. Unusually tiny mileages carry their own questions too: cars age by calendar as well as by odometer, so a 12-year-old car on 20,000 miles still needs its time-based servicing done and its perished rubber renewed. Whatever the number, condition and paperwork outrank it.
How to check a car's real mileage free
